SHE launches campaign to raise awareness of the thousands of lives that are saved each year - thanks entirely to the generosity of a donor

Over the years, we have featured in SHE some amazing women who have battled chronic illness and then, finally, been given a second chance for life after a successful transplant operation. It's made us realise just how crucial organ donation is - and how desperately short of donors we are in the UK. It was the inspiration we needed in launching our SHE Gift of Life campaign. And all you need to do, to ensure that someone else could benefit from your organs in the event of something happening to you, is to carry a donor card. What could be simpler?

In just under a year (April 2007- March 2008) a massive 911 lives were saved in the UK, thanks to transplants resulting from organ donation, but this number pales in significance when you realise that a staggering 7,655 patients were still actively waiting for a transplant by the end of March 2008.

 

The NHS Organ Donor Register currently comprises over 15 million people, which represents just 25% of the population. We are keen to boost that number so that as many lives as possible can be saved.  In 2007, 400 people died while waiting for a transplant. If a suitable donor had come forward in each of these cases, it's fair to say that every one of those lives could have had the chance of being saved.

 

A message from the Organ Donor Register

 

Right now more than 9,000 people in the UK need an organ transplant that could save or dramatically improve their lives.  But each year around 1000 people die while waiting for a transplant. Help us to give these people the chance for a new life.
