Who better than Susan Sarandon to kick off our style series on women who flourish with age. Women who are not defined by the ageing process, who have blossomed over the years, gaining in confidence, beauty and sartorial know-how.

At 64, Susan has never looked better. The Oscar winning actress, political activist and mother of three has honed her style over the years leaving behind '80s excess and ill-advised gowns, to celebrate her delicate, natural beauty and killer curves.

There is nothing wrong with a white suit, but teamed with thick knitted socks and tan peep-toe wedges, even this most classic of outfits will look a little odd to say the least! Photographed here at a performance of Pirates of Penzance in 1982, the trademark Sarandon quirkiness is out in force but is somewhat overshadowed by the heavy makeup and too short hair.

So this is what happens when already curly hair falls prey to the perm - why Susan why? Let's blame the '80s, the decade that claimed many a fashion victim, and forget that whiter than white face powder and bright red lips ever happened.

Now, we know that the dress is distracting but what really shocks us about this picture is just how ageing the darker hair colour is on Susan, pictured here at the Golden Globes in 1993. Teamed with the all too present cleavage and gaudy colours, the overall effect is a more than a little desperate.

Winning the Best Actress Oscar in 1996 was undoubtedly a career highlight for Susan Sarandon, and she received the award looking like Hollywood royalty too. Her understated hairstyle and makeup worked wonders with the bronze gown that was both elegant and show-stopping.

With her loose, flowing curls and clear complexion, Susan Sarandon has found what works for her and the secret is, less is more. Wearing nothing more than a good base, peach blush and gloss she looks younger, healthier and more confident in her skin.
