Best for winter skin: the SHE beauty editor loves
We're halfway through winter and I feel like I've been cold for ages and I'm longing for spring and all it brings - lighter evenings, flowers in bloom, and warmer weather that is more gentle on my skin. The constant chopping and changing of temperatures, from central heating to the outdoor elements, has played havoc with my skin, and the one thing I swear by, to keep it in optimum condition, is to exfoliate regularly. It gets rid of any dead cells, prevents my skin from looking dull and lacklustre and leaves it with a soft, healthy glow.
This winter Darphin Age-Defying Dermabrasion, £47 and Clarins Gentle Exfoliator, £23, have been my skin saviours. The Darphin Dermabrasion uses jojoba and silica powder to resurface the skin, plus pearl particles to make lines appear smoother and less obvious. And the icing on the cake? It contains Gentian extract and Bisabolol which are calming and prevent irritation. I use it once a week. The Clarins is a daily exfoliator that works like a toner, with AHAs (including tamarind fruit acids) to gently loosen dead skin cells and speed up cell renewal. This regime leaves skin looking refreshed and fabulously revitalised.

Best for winter skincare: the Good Housekeeping beauty editor loves
Do you have mid-winter skin (think dryness, irritability and flaking)? Cold, wind and moving between the chilly outdoors and centrally heated buildings can play havoc with the skin's built-in protective barrier of oils, waxes and natural moisturisers.
Dehydrated skin can become vulnerable to cracking, which allows potential irritants to penetrate, setting in motion a cycle of stress, irritation and damage. Experts think this constant low-grade inflammation also has a negative effect on collagen production, hastening skin ageing. So now's a good time to re-evaluate your skincare routine.
Gentle cleansers are best, and one I always recommend to sensitive-skinned friends is Medicated Cleansing Lotion, £14.95, from little-known brand Queen Cosmetics. For stockists and mail order, visit www.queen-cosmetics.com or call 01342 312739. Avoid toners with alcohol, as they can strip the skin of natural oils. I like Caudalie Toning Lotion, £14 (0791 740 3314), rich in beta-glucan, which reduces reactivity and leaves skin soft and hydrated.
This could be the time to upgrade your moisturiser to a richer formulation, too. Even oily skin can benefit from a product for normal skin types at this time of year. Well hydrated skin not only feels more comfortable, but also reflects light better, giving you a glow.
