Celebrity hair secrets: top tips

Twiggy

 How does she do it?

"Twiggy chooses a great colour for her skin tone, with multi toned highlights and lowlights, which give the appearance of thickness, volume and shine," says hair aficionado Charles Worthington.

According to Charles, the length is perfect as there is enough length to de-age and no wispy ends. Soft layers at the front frame her face and the bold fringe is a great way to add youth to hair.

Get the look

1. For this look, prep the hair with styling spray so results are smooth and sleek

2. Blow-dry each section using a large round brush to give a little volume at the roots and a rounded end, starting with base at the back

3. Use a nozzle attachment for a great smooth finish with shine

4. Finish with some shine spray or a tiny dab or serum if your hair is slightly thick and wavy.

Expert tip

"Twiggy has fantastic condition to her hair and to get that shine and moisture I would recommend using a weekly intensive conditioner and leave on for the full 10 minutes to get all the benefits," says Charles. Try Time Defy Protein Fortifying Masque (£5.49 available at www.boots.com)

Elle Macpherson

How does she do it?

"To emulate Elle's amazing hair and keep it in tip top condition you would have to get it trimmed every six to eight weeks and have regular conditioning treatments," says Elle's stylist Jamie Stevens.

Get the look

1. Wash and condition with a moisturising shampoo and conditioner for coloured hair

2. Then add some smoothing styling lotion to damp hair

3. Blow dry using a large ceramic brush in two-inch sections starting at the nape of the neck and work all the way through to the top, putting in the desired parting

4. Then tip head upside down and run your fingers through the hair with some serum to create a messy textured feel

5. Finish with a light spray of medium-hold hairspray

Expert tip:

"Always use a heat protector before blow-drying, tonging or straightening - when looking after colour and the upkeep of condition, great products are a must! Ask your hairdresser exactly what they'd use to ensure hair is looked after properly," says Jamie who is also hairdresser-in-residence of TV's How to Look Good Naked.

Demi Moore

How does she do it?

"Demi uses sulphate-free shampoos and eats a healthy balanced diet," says her stylist, British hairdresser Tara Smith. For styling, she uses Tara Smith Base Coat Serum as a primer, which helps to nourish and moisturise the hair. (£4.99 available from www.tarasmith.com Tesco and ASDA)

Get the look

1. Ask your hairdresser for some long layers to give hair a wavy look

2. Blow-dry section by section starting with the back on a big-barrelled round brush to get the root lift

3. For the undone finish, take your fingers through to break it up

4. Finish with glossing finishing product like Tara Smith Top Coat Glosser, for extra shine

Expert tip:

"When Demi is not working she doesn't always blow dry her hair, and when she does she uses a tourmaline dryer which is better for the health of hair," tips Tara.

Julie Christie

How does she do it?

"Julie Christie is blessed with thick slightly wavy hair which she keeps lustrous by eating a balanced diet and by using intensive conditioning treatments," says Antoinette Beenders, vice president of Aveda Creative.

Get the look

1. Rough-dry with a volumising mousse and then part hair on a short side parting

2. You can either use tongs to give a soft, natural wave or set with heated rollers and leave until cool

3. Whichever you choose, mist hair with hairspray first for extra hold

4. Tease curls with fingers to loosen and tousle

5. Finish with a light mist of flexible hairspray or shine spray

Expert tip:

"You can revive curls the day after by spritzing lightly with water," says Antoinette.

Emma Thompson

How does she do it?

"Emma's hair colour gives a great warm tone, which complements her skin tone. When bleaching hair, it is important to replenish it regularly with moisture and protect it from heat appliances," advices Charles.

Get the look

1. This style is a great up-do for shorter hairstyles

2. Prep hair with some styling mousse for some hold and volume

3. Take the hair, fold it inside itself and pin it securely with long Kirby grips

Expert tip:

"The side parting suits Emma's face shape and you can style a sweeping fringe to add softness and volume to the overall look," says Charles.
