How to colour your hair at home

Today's hair colouring technology can take a few years off your face - just pick the shade and tone that's right for you using our guide.

How to pick your perfect shade

The right shade comes down to skin tone and eye colour. If you have golden, olive or dark skin and brown eyes then you are warm. Go for deeper shades with a warm touch including caramel, bronze and auburn and avoid going too light.

Freshen up brown hair by adding some golden highlights or lowlights or use an all-over colour to boost shine. "Semi permanents are great solution to combat colour fade in between applications," says Clairol Creative Director, Duffy.

If you have fair skin with blue or green eyes then you are a cool. Highlights or cool browns will update your look or simply try improving your natural shade. Clairol Nice'n Easy has introduced five new shades of blonde that offer a very close match to the most popular shades of blonde.

Home hair colouring tips from Clairol Creative Director, Duffy

1. Do not colour hair yourself if you have had a previous chemical treatment like a perm or permanent straightening

2. Stick to two or three shades within your natural colour for successful home colouring - any drastic transformations will need a hairdresser

3. Smear some soft soap around your hairline before colouring to prevent rogue stains
