Follow celebrity stylist Andrew Barton\'s four steps to creating a bun, taken from his new book, Shiny Happy Hair (New Holland Publishers, £12.99)

1. For best results, first wash and blowdry the hair smooth using a round brush and mousse. Create a side parting with a comb then, using your hands, gather all the hair over to the opposite side of the head behind the ear area to make a ponytail. Use a hairband to secure.

2. Use your fingers to pinch random pieces through the top section to create more volume and texture.

Backcomb the pony

3. Using a bristle brush, backcomb the ponytail in sections. Smooth over the top section with the bristle brush and apply hairspray.

4. When the desired shape is in place, use kirby grips to secure. Hairspray should be used to give hold and final polish to the shape.
