Makeup to make you look younger
Achieve a youthful finish with these expert makeup tricks - whatever your age. By Jess Henley
30's: It's all in the eyes
Who's getting it right? Angelina Jolie, 33
"In your thirties your skin should be looking great," says skincare expert Nichola Joss, "but you will start to see fine lines appearing around your eyes and at the side of the mouth."
Tricks to try
Keep a youthful appearance with a moisturiser that boosts radiance. Try the Erborian Ginseng Infusion range, from £29.
If you suffer from puffiness under your eyes, look for a product that contains caffeine, such as Garnier Nutritionist Caffeine Eye Roll-On, £9.99. This stimulates circulation and stops blood pooling, soothing bags and reducing dark circles.
For an instant cosmetic fix, "Use a concealer under the eye and an illuminating pen on top," says international make-up artist Mary Greenwell. "I love Dior SkinFlash, £21, and Guerlain Precious Light, £25." Always choose a colour that is one shade paler than your foundation and blend down to the cheekbones.
40's: Put moisture back
Who's getting it right? Nicole Kidman, 41
As you hit 40, skin becomes dehydrated. It can look tired and less plump and fine lines will start deepening.
Tricks to try
To keep your skin looking fresh, treat it to a weekly moisture boost with a hydrating face mask. Mary Greenwell loves SKII-Facial Treatment Mask, £45 for six, or, alternatively, try Clarins Thirst Quenching Hydra-Care Mask, £26. "Focus particularly on your forehead and around the mouth," says Nichola Joss, "as that's where you'll notice the texture and thickness of your skin changing."
Add a touch of long-lasting colour to your complexion by using a light face tanner such as Nivea Sun SunTouch Self Tan Cream Face, £7.25. When using powder, go for one that has light-reflecting particles, which will make skin look dewy and young, such as Givenchy Prisme Libre, £30.
Remember to curl lashes to open up the eyes. You'll look five years younger in five minutes.
50's: Revive your skin
Who's getting it right? Michelle Pfeiffer, 50
In your fifties, you may start to notice slackness and reduced skin tone.
Tricks to try
To counter slackness, invest in a daily firming product, such as Estée Lauder Perfectionist CP+ Wrinkle Lifting Serum, £42.
To instantly revive dull skin, try Olay Regenerist Mico-Dermabrasion & Mini Peeling Kit, £24.99. The two products use a cocktail of AHAs, BHAs and salicylic acid to exfoliate, leaving skin looking luminous. Then gently pat on an instant filler, such as Gerard's Golden Line Fill Up, £28 (020 8202 2020), around the eyes and lips to smooth skin and hide wrinkles.
When applying make-up, "Go for a rose blush to give your complexion a youthful glow," says skincare expert Nichola Joss. And make sure eyebrows are full and well groomed. They frame your face, so shaping them correctly can make you look younger in minutes.
Finally, avoid wearing bright red lipstick as it can be very ageing; choose a natural, nudey pink or a soft beige-brown shade instead.
60+: Less is more
Who's getting it right? Diane Keaton, 62
Tricks to try
Age spots and pigmentation start taking hold when you hit your sixties, so in order to look younger instantly, use a great foundation such as Clinique Repairwear Anti-Ageing Make Up SPF15, £21.50. Also, try the new L'Oréal Age Re-Perfect Pro-Calcium range, £15.99 each, which uses vitamin C to lighten the complexion and reduce the production of melanin. The mineral pigments reflect light and immediately restore a natural, healthy glow.
With regard to skincare, "It's very important to massage your face when applying creams," says skincare expert Nichola Joss. "This pumps the blood to the surface of the skin, giving you a natural, youthful flush at once, and in the long term will help keep the skin firm."
Make-up artist Mary Greenwell advises that you become as light-handed with your make-up as you were in your twenties. "Too much is very ageing," she says. "Accept your wrinkles and work with them. And don't use too much shimmer, as it will sink into wrinkles and emphasise them. Add some colour to your cheeks to give a natural radiance, but stick to cream blushes, as they work far better to flatter mature skin. Remember, less is more when you're older."
