Eyes wide open: anti-ageing tricks for eyes

Dealing with dark circles

‘Never use heavy cover up to banish dark circles around your eyes,' warns Boots No7 make up artist Lisa Eldridge. ‘Sheer moisturising and light reflective concealers will do the job by reducing the appearance of dark circles and puffiness, without sticking in the fine lines.'  Try Boots No 7's Instant Radiance Concealer which is amazingly light and glides on for a flawless finish.

Open your eyes

Bobbi Brown claims a slick of black mascara can instantly transform the eye area. "My favourite mascara is black,' reveals Bobbi. ‘I find that when you wear it, you need less of other eye makeup to make your eyes stand out.  To open up and brighten your eyes, start by sweeping a light eye shadow shade (try white or bone) over the entire lid.  To make eyes look even bigger try lining both upper and lower lash lines with a dark eye shadow shade.'

Applying eye makeup: top tip

‘When applying eye make up, tilt your chin up slightly and rotate your head when needed,' suggests Bharti Vyas, holistic therapist and creator of the Skin Wisdom range at Tesco. ‘Hold your eyeliner pencil as if you're writing - you may also want to stabilise your hand on your cheek. Keep one eye closed, hold down your eyelid and as you draw along the lash line slightly rotate your head. This will help avoid unnecessary tugging. Tesco's All About Face Eyeliner Pencil has a wonderfully creamy formula and the built-in sharpener means you've got no excuse for blunt nibs!

Brow brush

‘Dishevelled eyebrows can take away from radiant looking eyes,' says Millie Kendall of Ruby and Millie fame. ‘Brushing your eyebrows can add some much needed room to the eyelid and will create more area to utilise make up.' Ruby and Millie's Folding Lash and Brush Comb is great for grooming on the go, and the mascara-style brush is perfect for bushier brows.

Making the most of your brows

‘Unfortunately eyebrows can fade with age, leaving little to frame the face,' says Clinique makeup artist Nadira V Persaud. ‘Introduce a higher arch with an eyebrow pencil or powder in one shade deeper to reveal an instant facelift.' Clinique's Instant Lift For Brows is a pencil and highlighter in one. Simply apply the colour, then follow with the highlighter to lift and brighten the brow.

Tricks with lashes

Curling lashes is a great way to open and lift the eye area, says Lisa Eldridge. ‘Finish with lots of mascara massaged into the roots before zig-zagging out towards the ends. This ensures the majority of the mascara stays at the roots, adding bulk and maximum definition whilst keeping the ends separated and clump free.' Shu Uemura's Mini Eyelash Curlers fit into the tiniest of handbags but still make the smallest of lashes stand out.
