Spectacular spas: restore and revive
Revive you body and mind with a trip to the Mayr Health Spa on Lake Worth in Austria
As a beauty editor, I have visited many spas but the Mayr Health Spa in Dellach on Lake Worth in Austria is in a league of its own. It offers treatment for a range of digestive disorders, such as ulcers and irritable bowel syndrome, as well as arthritis and allergies.
Founded in 1977, its principles are based on the holistic approach of Dr Franz Xaver Mayr. He believed that a strong digestion was the foundation of health and wellbeing, and created a simple system of eating that aims to maintain the ideal acid-alkaline balance in the body. You learn how to relax before your meals and, crucially, to chew your food until it is liquid in order to allow the stomach to complete the process.
A light tea is taken at 6pm because the body begins to wind down in the early evening. Eating between meals is not permitted. "Seventy per cent of the immune system is based in the abdomen," Dr Doris Schuscha explains, "and ninety per cent of the tryptophan needed to make serotonin for the brain - essential to ensure we feel good - is made there."
Following allergy testing, guests staying for the recommended three-week cure start detoxifying with a herbal ‘tea fast' and Epsom salts. Soups, spelt bread and sheeps' milk yogurt are then introduced, followed by the correct diet of two-thirds alkaline to one-third acid-forming foods. Nordic walking in the woods around the hotel, yoga, Pilates, spa baths, massage, swimming, sauna and steam sessions fill the days, along with plenty of rest. Whether you are seeking a preventive approach or need to give your body the chance to heal itself, the Mayr Cure provides a remarkable solution. Chrissie Masters
