Find your perfect lip colour
Corals, nudes, pinks, reds - theyre all big news for the next few months. We show you how to choose the right lip stick for your skin tone so you can wear your colour with confidence
‘Always choose a lip colour you’re comfortable with – it will make you feel and look confident,’ says make-up artist Farkhanda Chandio of natural makeup company Samina Pure. Here’s how to choose a shade that’s just right for you…
If you have fair skin…
Very bright shades, such as vivid corals, can drain paler complexions, according to Gucci Westman, artistic director for Revlon. ‘A berry, slightly rosy tone is nice for more natural lips, so they look healthy and sensuous,’ she says. ‘A reddish lipstick used as a stain gives natural-looking lips and works well with a fair complexion, too.’
If you have medium-toned skin…
You will suit a light peach, pinkish rose or a sheer grape. ‘Revlon ColorBurst in Blush (£7.99, Boots, www.boots.com), is a gorgeous nude beige that complements medium-toned skins perfectly,’ says Gucci. Don’t be afraid to experiment with this season’s coral shades too – they can also enhance mid-toned complexions.
If you have olive skin…
You can pull off rich shades at the deeper end of the colour spectrum. Darker skin can suit browns, plums and reds. Miners The Matte Factor Lip Paint in Deep Red (£3.99, www.minerscosmetics.co.uk) is a fabulous, intense crimson with a silky, not glossy, texture. On the more neutral scale, beiges can work well with olive skintones, too.
If you have Asian skin…
You may have yellow undertones to your complexion, and your natural lip colour may be anything from pale pink to deep red with bluish tones. ‘Warm pinks, tawny pinks, rich wines, deep berries and blue-toned reds will all work well with this colouring,’ says Chase Aston, make-up artist at The Body Shop.
If you have black skin…
‘It’s best to avoid using lip shades that have cool pink undertones or textures that are too frosty or shimmery,’ says Chase. Go for caramels, biscuit, toffees and brick reds.
Tip: Check a new lip colour in indoor and outdoor light. The right shade will enhance your natural skin tone.
