Expert Taste Test: Chocolate Ice Cream

Good Housekeeping online 11.06.2007

The very best choccy ice creams

Chocolate ice cream taste test winner, Gu

We tried a wide range of supermarket chocolate ice creams to find our favourites...

THE WINNER
★★★★★ Gü Chocolate Ice Cream,
£3.99 for 500ml.
A bittersweet ice cream with a luxuriously gooey chocolate sauce running through it. A real treat.

THE RUNNERS-UP
★★★★Hill Station Dark Chocolate Ice Cream, from £3.49 for 500ml.
As one of our tasters commented, this is more of a ‘grown-up’ ice cream: quite bitter, with hints of coffee, it reminded us of a cappuccino. It has a good, soft-but-not-too-whipped texture.
★★★ Tesco Finest Chocolate Brownie Ice Cream, £2.99 for 1 litre.
The texture is moussey and light, so this ice cream melts quickly, but that wasn’t a problem for our tasters, who liked the flecks of brownie. A little sweet for some.
★★★ Green & Black’s Chocolate Ice Cream, £4.19 for 500ml.
A rich, creamy texture with a pleasant chocolate flavour that, unfortunately, doesn’t linger.
