Expert taste test: ready-made fresh custard
We've tried the supermarkets ready-made custards and found the best
THE WINNER
*****Waitrose Fresh Vanilla Custard £1.85 for 500g
Flecks of vanilla give this custard a home-made look. It’s a good pouring custard – the consistency of double cream – and has a pleasant vanilla flavour without being overly sweet.
RUNNERS UP
****Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Fresh Custard £1.69 for 500g
Pale and flecked, the custard is sweet with a hint of vanilla. It’s let down by being slightly on the thin side, though.
***Marks & Spencer Extra Thick Fresh Custard £1.69 for 500ml
If you like your custard thick, this is the one for you – it doesn’t so much pour out of the jug as glug. A nice balance of rich fl avours, but our testers found it slightly cloying.
***Tesco Finest Fresh Custard £1.38 for 500g
Good, velvety-smooth consistency, but the intense sweetness overpowers the vanilla flavour.
*Morrison’s Fresh Custard 99p for 500g
Pleasant, thick texture, but the bright yellow colour, artifi cial sweetness and powdery consistency disappointed our testers. ‘It reminds me of school puddings,’ commented one.
