Expert taste test: Gourmet salted crisps

THE WINNER
***** Darling Spuds, 65p for 40g, available at farm shops, selected delis and darlingspuds.co.uk
Our tasters loved the rugged, natural appearance of these crisps. There’s a good bite and just the right amount of salt.

THE RUNNERS-UP
**** Somerfield Best Ever, £1.29 for 150g
A light crisp with a decent crunch. They’re moreish, with just enough salt, but they have a slightly acidic aftertaste.

*** Burts, 59p for 40g; £1.69 for 150g
Thinner than most, these crisps have a nice crunch but weren’t quite salty enough.

*** Kettle Chips, £1.39 for 150g
Thick-cut crisps that are pleasantly salted but have a stale oil flavour that lingers.

*** Tyrrells, £1.59 for 150g
There’s a good crunch to these crisps but, disappointingly, they tasted of oil and are a little low on salt.
