Perfect packing means perfect eating al fresco

Be prepared with our top tips for eating well on a trip outdoors. Here\'s the first...

Homemade pies and cakes are easy to transport - just bring them along in the tin they\'re cooked in. Wrap the tin up well in clear film or tin foil when cool. They\'re easier to cut up if left in their tins too.

Stay chilled

It\'s rotten to chow down on salad that\'s turned warm.

Keep all cold food well chilled in cool bags with plenty of ice packs until ready to eat - it makes a real difference.

Drinking al fresco

Take plenty of water. and take even more on hot days. A thermos of tea or coffee ifs perfect for the adults. Taking some alcohol? Sparkling water is good for making spritzers that are particularly refreshing on a summer\'s day.

Wine opener

Don\'t let forgetting one of these ruin your day

Pack a corkscrew for that bottle of wine, or if you don\'t trust yourself to remember one buy a screw top wine. Sorted.

Sit on it

Being comfortable out there is important so...

Take a rug to sit on and a few folding chairs for those who can\'t cope with sitting on the floor for great lengths of time. That way no one will be moaning and insisting you pack up and go home before you\'ve taken enough air out there. Bring a ball and a few outdoor games to keep kids happy too.

Clean up

Remember some black bags for any rubbish - and do take all your mess with you (you knew we\'d say that, didn\'t you!)

Sticky fingers?

Wet wipes, a wet cloth, napkins and paper towels are invaluable for wiping hands and sorting out any spillages.

Fresh food?

Don\'t prepare your food more than one day ahead. It might save time but those flavours will suffer like nobody\'s business.

Dairy products?

Avoid food with mayo-based or dairy-based dressings and sauces if you don\'t have cool bags. If you do take them, keep them in those bags until you need them.

Leftovers?

Don\'t be tempted to keep them

It\'s best to throw out any leftovers that have been sitting in the sun all day. Don\'t even think about putting them back in the fridge.
