Ingredients

U.S. U.K. Conversion chart
  • 225 gram(s) (8oz) unsalted butter, at room temperature (we used Lurpak, 99p for 250g, available at most supermarkets)
  • 75 gram(s) (3oz) icing sugar, sieved
  • 225 gram(s) (8oz) plain flour, sieved
  • Half teaspoon(s) baking powder
  • 2 tablespoon(s) cocoa powder, sieved (we used Green & Black's Organic Cocoa, £1.49 for 125g, from supermarkets)
  • few drops vanilla extract
  • 1-2tbsp milk
  • 50 gram(s) (2oz) plain chocolate, melted for topping (optional)

Method

  1. Preheat oven to gas mark 5/190ºC (180ºC in a fan oven). In a bowl, cream butter and icing sugar together with an electric whisk till pale and fluffy. Beat in flour, baking powder, cocoa powder and vanilla extract with enough milk to form a fairly soft dough. Chill to firm.
  2. With damp hands, roll into walnut-sized balls and place on a lined baking sheet. Flatten slightly with a wet fork, then bake for about 20 mins, till just firm to touch. Cool completely on a cooling rack. Serve as they are or drizzle with melted chocolate.
