200 gram(s) self-raising flour
110 gram(s) butter
110 gram(s) sugar
1 pinch(es) salt
1 large egg, beaten
4-5tbsp milk
250 gram(s) golden syrup (or black treacle)am.

Rub the flour and butter together until it resembles a breadcrumb consistency. Add the sugar and salt, then mix to a soft dropping consistency with the egg and milk.
Grease a 600ml (1pt) pudding basin and line with the syrup or treacle. Pour in the flour mixture and cover with greaseproof paper; secure the top and place the pudding basin in a saucepan half-filled with boiling water. Cover and steam for 2 hours. Serve warm with custard or cream.
