Food gadget review: the Miracle Lid
We put the Miracle Lid through its paces to see how well it performs. By James Garner
What is it?
With a very immodest name, this lid claims to help to make the cooking process more efficient as well as maintaining food flavour and reducing the requirement for oil.
How does it work?
The lid creates a temperature seal around most existing household flat bottom pans. This enables the cook to use less oil and keep the moisture of the food in. The design also allows liquids to be poured into the food without the need to remove the lid (thus keeping the heat in).
What are the best things about it?
Speed: Most recipes take half the time of traditional cooking methods. You can cook frozen meats and vegetables without defrosting and you can cook pasta with virtually no wate.
Health: Obviously using less oil reduces the fat content of the meal and would be ideal for people on low fat diets such as the Alli programme (www.dietdiaries.co.uk). Also you can cook at lower temperatures which mean that nutritional value is not lost through hot cooking.
Taste: Because of the heat seal, the flavour of the food is, indeed, good
What are the worst things about it? It's a bit fiddly to clean. I needed to dismantle it to remove splatter. The accompanying recipe book is very US centric - no metric measurements, use of quarts and shrimps. It only seals pans with a flat top (ie ones without a pouring lip.
Anything else? It's dishwasher safe.
How much does it cost?
