Restaurant review: fabulous London bistro

Penks restaurant

Penk's is a gem of a bistro nestled amongst the trendy shops and bars in Queen's Park, London. Just seconds away from the tube, it is a cosy and friendly haven which draws you in through its tiny shop front. Yet, despite being small, the nifty table arrangements, mirrors and bright murals makes it feel light and spacious and somehow special.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by a friendly waiter who had the knack of knowing when to offer advice without being overbearing. He was knowledgeable about where each item of produce was sourced and, upon his recommendation, we selected the ‘Wine of the Week' - a delightful Beaujolais Blanc Vignes L'Ancien Relaism, which cost only £19.

My starter of Marseillese Style Fish Soup with all the Trimmings was a Mediterranean masterpiece. The warming soup base of garlic, onions and herbs accentuated the freshness of the fish hiding within.  The 'trimmings' - its own rouille, grated parmesan and garlicky croutons were a real treat. Meanwhile, my partner had the Mixed Seafood Platter which included large juicy prawns and the best calamari we had ever tasted - seriously impressive

The main courses did not let us down. My Steak with Herby Butter was tender and was cooked to perfection whilst I was assured that the Cod with Potato and Fennel Gratin was creamy and comforting. Our side dishes of baby carrots, sautéed spinach and crisp courgette fritters were bursting with colour and flavour.

With just enough room for desert, I went for the Warm Chocolate Fondant which was served with pistachio and vanilla ice cream. Every chocoholic's dream, Warm, gooey and nuttily delicious. The lemon tart with crème fraiche was fabulous - a perfect blend of tartness and sugar. The French style cheese plate also looked incredibly inviting but alas we were too full!

Penks has a happy hour (and a half) every night (6.00 - 7.30pm) offering selected half price aperitifs and is well worth a visit. We hear the Roast Sunday lunches are to die for. And they do a Lunch Fixed Price at £14.50 for two courses and a Dinner Fixed Price at £14.50 for two. Starters from £5 - £11. Main Courses from £10 - 16. Puddings from £6 - £11 courses.

Opening hours: Mon - Sat 12.00am - 3.00pm. 6pm - 11pm. Sun 10.am - 10.30pm.
