How to make your own garden trellis
Follow Prima gardening expert Ann-Marie Powell's easy guide
Making your own trellis is easy and saves you money, as well as giving an individual look. You can use dowels or timber batons, though I find bamboo just as effective, as well as economical. If you or a friend have bamboo growing in your garden, you can prune it in spring - if not, it's available from most garden centres. For a more modern vibe, you could even use copper pipe.
How to make it
● To make the trellis, measure the area for which you're building your support. Then, after deciding how far apart your trellis squares should be, cut the number of upright poles or rods required to size.
● Push the upright verticals into the ground first, as this makes it easier to construct the trellis - it will also help make it more secure.
● Crisscross the remaining rods at right angles, using garden wire or zip ties to hold the rods firmly in position.
● Wrap lengths of string, raffia or rope around the ties to camouflage them.
● Move your trellis into position, sink the rods into the ground and then lean it against your fence or wall.
● Finally, attach the trellis to the wall with nails or vine eyes and wire or garden twine. Now you can plant that climber you've always wanted! And here's how to plant a climber
