Good Housekeeping is renowned for its free consumer test reports (now available FREE online!) and for its continued dedication to finding the best products, shops and campaigns through its testing and consumer awards. This year the prestigious judges included: Aggie MacKenzie (co-presenter, How Clean Is Your House? and former GH journalist), John Churchill (senior design manager, Dyson Appliances), Helen Peavitt, (curator of Consumer Technology, the Science Museum) and Tony Juniper (former chief executive officer, Friends of the Earth). A winner because of its public impact and tangible results. Partnering with the Energy Saving Trust, the campaign showed UK householders they could save 40% of the energy usually used per load of washing by turning to 30 degrees C. Independent research has shown that UK consumers are washing eight times more loads at this lower temperature than in 2002.

Sustain\'s (The Alliance for Better Food and Farming) Children\'s Food Campaign (childrensfoodcampaign.org.uk)

By co-ordinating the work of many organisations, Sustain has helped to bring about big improvements in school meals, reinstate cookery as a compulsory school subject, improve food labelling and devise tough regulations for junk food advertising. \'This may be a quiet campaign, but it\'s vital.\' Louise Chunn, Editor GH
