August: the lazy gardener's guide
Giving you more time to enjoy the fruits of your labours. By Pattie Barron
● Avoid watering in the heat of the day water loss will be greater and plants can get sun-scorched.
● Sow rainbow chard for a colourful crop from autumn to spring.
● Shape up topiary and evergreens.
● Prune rambling roses after they have flowered.
● Need more colour? Paint a cheap wooden bench with a bright exterior paint.
● Keep water topped up in ponds and bird baths.
August project: fragrant lanterns
Make tea-light holders from jam jars: fashion a handle from heavy wire and hook on to another piece wrapped around jar rim. Tuck sage, rosemary or bay leaves around wire, then pop in a candle.
