June: the lazy gardener's guide

lazy gardener: basil pot and lantern in garden

● Spray blackfly and greenfly with a high-pressure water jet, then wipe off with fingers.

● This is the best time to choose roses. For inspiration, visit gardens through the National Gardens Scheme’s The Yellow Book 2011 and see them in full glory.

● Stake young plants now so they won’t fall over later. Prod in woody prunings – they will become invisible as the plants grow around them.

● Prune spring shrubs after they’ve bloomed.

● Feed flowers weekly with dilute tomato feed – use dilute seaweed feed for foliage.

● Sow pea tips for a pretty and tasty topping. Push with a finger into a tray of compost, then water and harvest when tips start to twirl.

June project: instant basil pots

Basil is tricky to grow from seed, so cheat and split a potful from the supermarket. Pull apart gently into sections, then re-pot into terracotta pots filled with multi-purpose compost topped with grit and keep in a sunny spot. To use, pinch out tips, which will keep the plant bushy.
