June: the lazy gardener's guide

● Spray blackfly and greenfly with a high-pressure water jet, then wipe off with fingers.
● This is the best time to choose roses. For inspiration, visit gardens through the National Gardens Schemes The Yellow Book 2011 and see them in full glory.
● Stake young plants now so they wont fall over later. Prod in woody prunings they will become invisible as the plants grow around them.
● Prune spring shrubs after theyve bloomed.
● Feed flowers weekly with dilute tomato feed use dilute seaweed feed for foliage.
● Sow pea tips for a pretty and tasty topping. Push with a finger into a tray of compost, then water and harvest when tips start to twirl.
June project: instant basil pots
Basil is tricky to grow from seed, so cheat and split a potful from the supermarket. Pull apart gently into sections, then re-pot into terracotta pots filled with multi-purpose compost topped with grit and keep in a sunny spot. To use, pinch out tips, which will keep the plant bushy.
