Trinny & Susannah's fashion tips for autumn
The style gurus advise on updating your wardrobe and dressing clever over 40
How can I update my wardrobe for the new season without spending a fortune?
1. Don't be scared to bring out the old stuff - jeans, shirts, and jackets are all back in so that's less to buy. Vintage is always in!
2. Invest in a good pair of heels.
3. Mix high and low end fashion.
4. Invest in four black basics - black trousers, black heels, a high waisted skirt and a blazer.
5. Just buying accessories is a perfect way to revamp your wardrobe - new buttons on your old but favourite blazer or a chunky waist belt can make all the difference to an outfit!
6. Most of us notice that we put on weight more easily as we age but just because you have put a bit of weight on over the last year doesn't mean you have to buy new clothes. Control underwear is a great way to drop a dress size and fit in to last year's size 12's. Our range of Original Magic Knickers are fabulous and women have been known to lose up to 2 dress sizes - they are great value and can be worn over and over making them the perfect investment.
I've put on more weight on my arms and around my middle as I've got older, how can I dress to disguise this?
1. Invest in tops that encircle and highlight your body at the slimmest points and skim your tummy
2. Peplum sleeves will cover you upper arms
3. Trousers that fasten at the side and that are flat fronted will hide your tummy's lumps and bumps
4. A great long sleeve white shirt with wide cuff will elongate your arms and make them appear thinner
I like to keep up with fashion, but I'm too old for catwalk designs. What trends can I wear over 40?
A fabulous trench coat, a great pair of trousers and a classic shirt will never age. We both feel that you should dress for your body shape not what you feel comfortable in.
I know I should have a bra fitting regularly, but aside from this, what should I look for when I shop for underwear?
Make sure you feel sexy yet comfortable in your underwear. There is the perfect shape for you so just try on as many as you can - knickers should fit so you have no overhang.
I'm tired of wearing the same old black, beige and brown all the time but am worried about getting colours wrong. Any advice?
Colour has the power to make you healthy or unhealthy, fat or thin, so the best thing to do is get a selection of different coloured clothes, stand in front of a full length mirror and go through the check list. What colours make your eyes look brighter, what colours make you dark circles look worse, what colours make your skin look radiant? This will help you find out what tones and shades are right for you.
Trinny adds ‘Everyone suits nearly every colour, it's just the tone that changes. For example Susannah suits lemon yellow and I suit mustard yellow.'
New range from Trinny and Susannah
To add to their already wide range of underwear, Trinny and Susannah have just launched two new products, the All-in-One Body Smoother and All-in-One Body Shaper.
Both are designed to lift and shape, create a slimming effect for bum and tum, smooth out lumps, banishing saddlebags, with adjustable straps, push up bra and no visible seam. These effectively shape and hone the figure you already have to make the best of the good bits, and to minimise the worst! For more information, click here
Trinny and Susannah's Original Magic Knickers and Original Magic Tights range are also available from Debenhams, starting from £20.
