Nature's medicine chest: garlic
A herbal remedy that lowers blood pressure and soothes sore throats, among other properties
It may do no favours for your breath, but garlic is a natural superfood. Allicin is one of the active ingredients and its antifungal, antibacterial properties back up its use traditionally as a sore-throat remedy. More importantly, other compounds have been found to help protect cells in the heart, and even lower blood pressure. Research has linked a healthy consumption to a decreased risk of osteoarthritis in women.
Look out for wild garlic (left) in the coming months and green garlic in late spring just dug up, the phytochemicals within are at their peak.
