It may do no favours for your breath, but garlic is a natural superfood. Allicin is one of the active ingredients and its antifungal, antibacterial properties back up its use traditionally as a sore-throat remedy. More importantly, other compounds have been found to help protect cells in the heart, and even lower blood pressure. Research has linked a healthy consumption to a decreased risk of osteoarthritis in women.

Look out for wild garlic (left) in the coming months and ‘green’ garlic in late spring – just dug up, the phytochemicals within are at their peak.
