We all do more than just cook in the kitchen. It's where the children do homework, friends chat and guests gather before a meal. Find cabinets with luxurious surfaces to make the most of the kitchen's varied role. My favourite finishes are wood and lacquer,' says Adrienne Chinn. A wood finish is beautiful when you run the grain horizontally across cabinets, and lacquer reflects light to create the illusion of space.'
Put a twist on timber kitchen cabinets by using an unusual paint colour. Fired Earth's Elements of Colour paint range, from £25.95 for 2.5L, is hardwearing and each of the 120 hues are muted enough to blend well. If you're feeling brave, paint the bottom cabinets a different colour to the top.
Open shelves put your favourite china and loveliest cookbooks on display. Buy a cabinet from an antiques shop and paint the inside,' says Cate Burren. Glass and silverware look great against a dark background, while choosing a contrasting colour to your china will make a statement.'

Your bedside tables are the first thing you see in the morning and the last thing you see at night, and are an affordable way to add luxury to the bedroom. I love the bone inlay furniture from Niki Jones, from £435. In a pared-back setting it looks divine,' says Cate Burren.
A long built-in wardrobe will benefit from a mix of materials to lighten the look, such as Sharps' Highline collection of timber, patterned and coloured-glass door panels, from £1800 for a complete wardrobe, designed and fitted.
There are great ways to put your stamp on a cabinet. For new door handles and knobs, Laura Ashley has a lovely range of cut glass and mother-of-pearl options from £12. Or if you're feeling more adventurous, try decoupage with paper or fabric,' says Zoe Brewer.
