Big ideas for small kitchens

Small contemporary style kitchen

A plain, pale scheme makes the walls ‘recede’ and the room appear more spacious. Pattern should be minimal and confined to alcoves and other small areas where it adds interest without being obtrusive. Simple lines, flush surfaces and minimal clutter add a sense of contemporary calm, while a traditional wooden floor and pretty table setting will maintain a country feel.

  • A traditional gate-leg table will fold away, leaving room for a clothes-drying rack

  • Tall fitted cabinets make the most of the higher areas of the room. Use library steps or a small stool to reach the top shelves.

  • Flush-fronted cabinets keep the space uncluttered and can be used to conceal the washing machine, dishwasher etc.

  • An island unit can house the sink and its worktop provides useful extra eating space (tall stools will fit underneath).

  • The space below a sloping ceiling can be filled by a sleek utility-style fridge. The adjacent corner can be used to store stacking or folding chairs and the gate-leg table.
