Greener Streets Campaign tip 2: How to create 'green' off street parking

To cope with the increase of parking restrictions in residential areas, many householders are opting to convert their front gardens into spaces for their cars. But this can cause problems with drainage when it rains. During a heavy downpour, water runs straight off paved or concreted areas into storm drains, rather than soaking into the water table naturally. These drains can't always cope with the amount of water and when they overflow, your home's at risk from flooding.

Since October 2008, homeowners have had to get planning permission to pave over a front garden bigger than five square metres with non-porous materials, but there are lots of eco alternatives to concrete, which look good and won't cause flooding. From plastic meshes that let grass grow through, to loose and bonded gravel, there's a permeable version to suit you and your property, all while maintaining a bit of greenery.
