Greener Streets Campaign tip 6: how to attract wildlife to your garden
Protect endangered species and garden the natural way by welcoming birds, butterflies and hedgehogs
Plan your garden well and it will become a place that's never short of visiting wildlife. If you're short on space make the most of vertical surfaces. Attach a trellis to a wall or fence and grow a honeysuckle or other climbing plants to make nesting sites for birds and a refuge for insects. You could also consider replacing an old wooden fence with a holly hedge, which produces berries and shelter.
Attracting hedgehogs
Hedgehogs eat pests, such as slugs, snails and worms, but don't leave bread and milk out for them, as this can give them diarrhoea. Cat food is the best thing to give hedgehogs.
Attracting birds
Try a mix of ground feeders, tables and hanging feeders to attract different birds, and perhaps some insect hotels, such as log piles or leaves. If you're lucky the birds will feed close enough to the window that you won't need binoculars to watch them.
