* ‘Electric' underfloor heating consists of heated cables or a mat of wires fitted beneath flooring.
* The ‘wet' type has pipes filled with hot water pumped from your boiler and is more disruptive to fit.
* ‘Electric fires provide a great focal point, and the use of LED technology for flame effects offers much lower running costs than the older and less efficient ribbon and bulb fires of the past,' says Niall Deiraniya from Dru.
* Bioethanol is a carbon-neutral fuel. The fires don't need a flue, pipework or electricity and can be put anywhere in a room. They won't replace your main heating system, but provide top-up heating. The fuel is available in one litre bottles from fire and stove shops. For ecofriendly heating, investigate solar hot water heating and heat pumps.
