From bland to beautiful

Empty conservatory before makeover
Garden lovers Suzanne and Chris Bryant needed inspiration for their new-but-bland conservatory. So I decided to create a space for them that would connect their home with their garden. I find the vibrant energy of spring shoots really invigorates a home and brings it out of its long winter hibernation.

Detail of Oliver\'s finished conservatory
I\'ve taken inspiration from my time working as an exhibition designer at the National Maritime Museum where I first became aware of the botanist and explorer Joseph Banks (1743-1820). He was a passionate collector and documented a vast variety of plants and animals. Banks most famously joined Captain Cook on board the HMS Endeavour in his expeditions to explore South America, Tahiti, New Zealand, Australia and Java.
A place to relax

Armchair in Oliver\'s conservatory
This conservatory is designed to be an active, inspiring and relaxing space. It\'s a place where you\'d feel comfortable sitting in a favourite armchair at the end of the day surveying the view, but could also work in, potting bulbs and seeds for the growing season ahead.
Natural choice

Cabinet with books and plants
The natural and muted colours are inspired by soft, grey shades of timber left out in the sun, punctuated with fresh, crisp, verdant greens. The use of natural materials such as timber, sisal, leather and reed gives the space a textural and earthy feel.
Elegant blinds

Blinds in the conservatory
A simple but effective eco feature is the use of blinds, which will help control the heat and light levels in the space, and will keep it warmer at night.
Inspired collection

Sideboard with items displayed in a museum-like way
The room conveys a sense of history and precedence, and pieces have been laid out much as they may have been in a museum. Leather journal, £40, Paperchase. See The Horniman Museum in London\'s Forest Hill at www.horniman.ac.uk for more inspiration.

Hanging lanterns filled with plants
Try hanging lanterns from the roof of your conservatory and filling with trailing plants. Find similar lanterns at Parlane International.
