Don't write off a shabby table and chairs, get out the sandpaper and rub the wood back to a smooth surface - this can then be given a glossy coat of varnish or, for the country kitchen, painted off-white or cream. Alternatively a pretty tablecloth or practical wipe-clean oilcloth will cover a multitude of sins. Complete the look with co-ordinating seat cushions.
