UPDATE: New washing machine advice
Yes you do need to keep your washing machine clean - here's how to go about it
In our June 2009 issue of Good Housekeeping we recommended using bleach in the washing machine to get rid of a mouldy smell. Although we tested the advice five times in different washing machines, some readers have reported suds spilling out of the detergent drawer of their machines, which we think must be due to different levels of agitation and residual soap in the sump. We therefore suggest reducing the quantity of bleach: add 30ml to the soap dispenser, then run the machine, without detergent, at the highest temperature.
What causes that mouldy smell?
Mouldy-smelling washing machines are a common problem now that low-temperature washes and bleach-free detergents have become common. Without heat and bleach, bacteria and detergent can build up under the drum and in the pipes.
Tip
Before you run your machine with the 30ml of bleach, it's a good idea to pull out the detergent drawer and soak it in bleach. Scrub it well, getting right into the corners as thoroughly as you can, before rinsing it and replacing it.
