Big ideas for a small spare room

Use these ideas to create a comfortable extra sitting or work room as well as somewhere for your guests to sleep

The spare room often suffers from the problem of sloping walls. Although they offer no practical surface space, they do provide an excuse to indulge in a decorative paper, which will highlight any interesting angles. Use a subtle, receding design to avoid making a small room look smaller.

Confine shelving and display space to a flat wall, leaving the rest of the room uncluttered. Directional clip-on lights can double as bedside lamps.

An elegant sofa bed turns a daytime sitting room into a double bedroom, and a folding table that is a desk by day can act as a dressing table at night.

Clear acrylic furniture, such as versatile stacking tables, is wonderful for small spaces, as its transparency makes it appear to take up no room.

Instead of bulky curtains, opt for a discreet roller blind that will provide privacy while maximising the light.
