10 rules for creating bathroom space
It’s usually the tiniest room in the house, but with careful planning and decoration a bathroom can be as beautiful as it is functional
1) Keep the floor free of clutter and choose wall-mounted fixtures whenever possible. This opens up the room visually and provides accessibility for cleaning.
2) Enhance the sense of space with the colours you choose. A basic white or pale colour scheme unifies the area and creates light. A gentle contrast colour, such as grey/white works well. Vary the mood with coloured towels and accessories.
3) Keep it simple, and avoid strong patterns in small spaces.
4) The clever use of mirrors creates an illusion of space and reflects light. Many small bathrooms are without windows, and mirrors or mirrored tiles are an effective way to increase light.
5) Choose a wall-mounted heated towel rail instead of a radiator. Otherwise, make use of the heat by using clip-over towel rails for radiators.
6) For small or awkward spaces, consider a corner basin or one that incorporates a left or right-hand shelf - but remember to leave enough elbow room. If you put a bath under the eaves, make sure the getting-in-and-out spot corresponds to the highest point in the ceiling.
7) A shower takes up less space than a bath but, before doing away with the tub, think about who in the family would miss a relaxing soak. Substituting a shower for a bath can also affect the resale value of your home. A good solution is to install a shower over the bath.
8) A folding door or sliding screen saves space around the shower.
9) Re-hang an inward-opening door to gain more floor space.
10) Position all the fittings along one wall. This instantly streamlines the room and creates space for easy movement.
