10 top tips for exposed or coastal gardens
Expert advice on getting the best from your seaside plot. By Paula Woods
● Plant a variety of robust shrubs and trees to provide shelter.
● Hedges are able to withstand gales better than fences, as the wind can filter through them. In addition, they provide a greener, more wildlife-friendly backdrop for plants.
● If you're lucky enough to have a walled area, consider using it as an eating or seating place. It will be sheltered and also benefit from the reflected warmth of the bricks.
● Light is very bright by the sea or on a hilltop, so use bold, vibrant-coloured flowers in your scheme.
● Hard frosts are rare in coastal areas, so more delicate and exotic species usually survive most winters. Remember to keep the horticultural fleece handy for the odd cold night, though.
● Close planting allows you to grow smaller, more delicate flowers, as tucking them between robust varieties will protect them from wind.
● Plants with thin or finely divided leaves provide less wind resistance and are therefore less likely to be flattened during high winds. For this reason, grasses and bamboos are particularly good for seaside gardens.
● Silver foliage is excellent for coastal locations, as fine hairs on the leaves trap the salt. Try English lavender, Lambs' ears, osteospermum and rosemary.
● As wind can be very drying, plants in blustery conditions require lots of watering. Make sure there's a ready supply and consider investing in a water butt.
● Use hard landscaping in harmony with your environment. Driftwood, rocks and pebbles will all add texture and interest. But remember, it's illegal to take stones from the beach, so buy from your local garden centre instead.
