How to plant up a windowbox

HB terracotta windowboxes with plants

You'll need:

● windowbox

● peat-free multipurpose compost

● old broken clay pots

● small trowel

● selection of plants

● plant food

■ Place a layer of broken pots (known as crocks) at the base of the container to aid drainage.

■ Fill your container with compost, leaving a 4cm gap between the top of the compost and the rim of the pot.

■ Arrange taller plants in the middle with trailing varieties close to the edges.

■ Once you're happy with the arrangement use the trowel to dig one hole per plant, remove the plants from their pots and place them in the holes.

■ Fill in any gaps with extra compost and press down firmly with your fingers.

■ Water thoroughly, especially in warm weather, and feed. Always read the label on the plant.
