Knitted cakes: how to knit a Swiss roll

Materials

● 4-ply yarn in dark brown and white
● pair of 23/4mm/no12 needles
● foam block, 9cm circle, 2cm thick

Abbreviations

alt: alternate; C6B: cable 6 back. slip next sts to cable needle and hold at back, K3, K3 from cable needle; C6F: cable 6 front, as C6B but hold cable needle in front; dec: decrease; foll: following; g-st: garter stitch (every row knit); inc: increase; K: knit; P: purl; patt: pattern; rem: remaining; rep: repeat; RS: right side; st(s): stitch(es); st-st: stocking stitch; WS: wrong side

Front and back

(Both alike.) Using two strands of yarn throughout, cast on 12 sts in dark brown. Work from chart in st-st, inc 1 st at each end of 2nd and foll alt rows until there are 20 sts, work 10 rows, dec 1 st at each end of next and foll alt rows until 12 sts rem. Work one row, cast off.

Side piece

(Make 1). Using a dark brown, cast on 70 sts. Work 2cm in st-st. Cast off.

To make up

Join short ends of side piece. Sew front to side around edge. Fit foam in place. Sew back to side.
