Why go?
Snowdonia (Eryri) is home to Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa), the highest mountain in England and Wales. This Welsh wonderland is a world-class wilderness. Green and lush or craggy and dramatic, this devastatingly lovely region blends mountains and coast, lakes and forests. With a few turns off the main paths, you can be in a landscape which looks as if its from another century, and you dont need to walk far to feel away from the world.
Rail
Out and about The breathtaking views at the 3560ft summit of Snowdon are worth the ascent. The Snowdon Mountain Railway takes you all the way book in advance at www.snowdonrailway.co.uk. Or, to go by foot, there are six main routes one for all levels of fitness. The easiest, the Llanberis Path (around ten miles), is also known as the tourist path, and starts near the railway station. Combine a trip up by train with a walk down.
Historical tour
Take a gentle ride on the Ffestiniog Railway, the oldest railway company in the world. The newest route from Snowdon to Porthmadog takes passengers through glorious mountain scenery.
Bus
Use the Snowdon Sherpa bus service which takes you all over Northern Snowdonia and connects with walks and mountain destinations (www.gwynedd.gov.uk).
Country fare
The Royal Oak Hotel in Betws-y-Coed serves up the finest Welsh produce at the Llugwy River Restaurant and the relaxed Grill Bar. Welsh lamb is a speciality, but they also serve great fish and chips. Visit www.hotel-snowdonia.co.uk.
