Cheap yet chic: all-inclusive in Croatia

Porec, Croatia

With its spectacular coastline and great climate, Croatia has long been a brilliant budget destination. Now, enterprising family-friendly resorts are offering new all-inclusive packages, making a holiday here even more of a bargain.

The Valamar Club Tamaris, near Porec in the Istria region, is a well-run resort with pretty gardens and paths through the pinewoods to the beach. It is based around two pool areas, one with music and a snack bar – ideal for families – and the other a peaceful haven for sunbathing.

By night there’s live entertainment, and, by day, a full family activity programme. Visit the fitness centre, play football and tennis, sign up for sailing, snorkelling and surfing, paddle-boarding or diving. There are Turkish and Finnish saunas, an outdoor Jacuzzi and a beauty centre offering an array of treatments. Hire a bike, have a crack at aerobics or play basketball – this is not a place to get bored. But if you want to explore, the beach is seconds away.

A Croatian, Istrian and Italian buffet is served each evening – or grab a bite in the Tavern Tamaris or enjoy some fresh seafood and spectacular coastal views in the Valeta restaurant. Meals are included, but dinner away from the resort won’t stretch the budget – expect to pay around £7 per person for a meal, served with good local wine, in a waterfront restaurant.

Things to do

● Visit Rovinj, an enchanting coastal town an hour’s drive from Porec. Wander the steep cobbled streets and browse the artists’ studios for local crafts and ceramics.
● Take a half-day boat trip (£35) and see Istria’s picturesque coves. A seafood lunch is included – accompanied by a live band playing local folk songs.
