How to... plant dahlias

Red Dahlia flower

Plant tubers in a sunny spot in mid-spring (3-4in deep) into well-composted soil mixed with a generous addition of fertiliser, and protect tubers from late frost with a covering of straw.

Add stakes at planting time, securing the stems as they grow, and keep them well watered through the summer and deadhead them regularly to fully enjoy their energetic display.

Favourites include ‘Red Alert', graceful ‘Clair de Lune' and the sumptuous blooms of ‘Bishop of Llandaff'.
