How to... train a topiary cone
Plants trained into geometric shapes add an elegant touch
Topiary looks great in containers. Growing pieces in pots allows you to move them around the garden as the seasons progress. Here's how to do it:
Transfer your chosen plant into its permanent container, filling in around the root ball with compost mixed with a slow-release fertiliser.
Use lengths of bamboo pushed firmly into your compost and tied together at the top to create a cone-shaped frame. Wire frames in all manner of shapes are available from garden centres.
Tuck any stray shoots behind the canes, securing any strong stems to your frame with garden twine.
Snip off any remaining straggly shoots.
Your plant will fill out your frame as it grows - simply snip off those shaggy shoots that protrude from the frame until your plant has filled your cone completely.
Once your shape has been achieved, to keep your cone in tip-top condition, use small shears to trim off untidy stems. Top up your container with new compost in spring, feed it regularly and ensure your plant is well watered.
