I shall watch this  post with interest, as i grow up  in Leicester,  and there used to be excellent   fabric  outlets  including  the  wonderful    market  place

when I lived in Sheffield   great  off cuts  could be found, straight   from  the factory  to  the stall

Hi Kirstie, nice to meet you.

I live in Leicester and am an avid sewer, so I'll try and help you.  Alas most of the fabric shops have closed now, the only ones that I know of open are Fabric Discount Warehouse, which is on the Lee Circle, under the multi-storey carpark.  They sell dressmaking, bridal and curtain fabrics, also stock patterns ahd habby.

Lewis in the new shopping complex, which is way over my budget and don't seem to stock an awful lot anyway.

Fenwicks, again quite pricey, but they do have some interesting fabrics for special occasions.

And the indoor/hand standing market.  There you will find Stuarts Fabrics, he has a permanent stall, and is there Monday to Saturday, he sells the most amazing fabrics at very reasonable prices.

The best day to visit the market is Tuesdays, there are one or two other stalls standing then, one is on the very edge of the market towards the Horsefair Street end, he is very cheap and has a good selection.  Another sells factory off cuts of t-shirting etc, I can usually find something nice, most of his stuff is a £1 a metre, but a word of warning, buy it off the roll, if you buy a remnants check it carefully for flaws.  He is in the middle of the market opposite the Corn Exchange.

Hope you find this info helpful, good hunting.

You are very welcome Kirstie, I'm popping in tomorrow to see if there's anything new about.  Wish me luck.

I have recently found a stunning fabric warehouse in Leicester - unbeknown to me I was a mere 20 miles away (in Oakham) from a huge selection of fabrics (and more handicraft sundries) at amazing prices and quality.

It is called Kisco Fabrics - the Fabric Guild - run as a members club with a one off membership fee of £5, limited club opening times - on Fridays and Sundays. Well worth numerous visits, allow plenty of time on your first expedition!

I think this is the web address   www.thefabricguild.co.uk

You will not be disappointed.

Try Fabulous Fabrics in Ashby dela Zouch... bit of a drive... but wonderful fabrics! Search for them on the net.
