Hi all, came across this today.  Thought you'd be interested in a quick read and wondered what you thought.  I'm slightly sympathetic to the retailer, it's a difficult call to make when someone is thought to be under age but it seems to me they're dammed if they do, dammed if they don't.  Sadly the couple involved don't see the funny side.  I was challenged years ago about being old enough to buy booze and thought it was actually quite funny.  Perhaps we not only have a credit crunch but a humour crunch ...! Only just found this post.

I would have been thrilled to think someone thought I looked too young to buy alcohol. In our local supermarket a gentleman was asked to prove his age and he was OVER 70 !!!!!...

I read this article and wondered why the couple were making such a fuss. Seems people just want to moan for the sake if it and get their 5 minutes of fame in the paper.

Always behave like a duck--keep calm and unruffled on the surface but paddle like the devil underneath.

I actually work for the supermarket in question, and their policy is to ask anyone who looks as if they're under the age of 25 and are purchasing alcohol etc for ID.

Most people are fine about it, but there's always the odd one who makes a fuss.

But we do have to be very careful, as we don't know if we're serving someone who has been sent in by trading standards to check if we are serving underage people, because if that happens we end up with an on the spot fine of £80 plus disiplinary action and a possible appearance in court,.

and the store ends up being fined and loses it's licence.

It is very difficult to judge peoples ages, in the place I used to work, we had a girl you'd swear was at least 20, she was   in fact  our Saturday girl and was 15 years old!

Good for Sainsburys. Although on the whole I think 'elf & safety and so on are often completely barmy, underage drinking is no joke. Though I think it would have been wiser to have taken the customer's word.

And yes, we are suffering a sense of humour failure over so much these days - and I speak here as the traditional butt of so much humour, a mother-in-law!
